The Proposed "Diamond Cup" Event
College basketball is on the verge of introducing a massive new regular-season event called the "Diamond Cup," which is currently in the latter planning stages and targeted to debut in the 2027 - 28 season. The proposed eight-team pool-play event is designed to feature some of the sport's most storied blue-blood programs. The schools involved in deep discussions include Arizona, Connecticut, Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, and North Carolina. Duke was initially involved but bowed out due to a separate three-game contract with Amazon Prime Video. The event aims to redefine the beginning of the college basketball season, potentially offering unprecedented, guaranteed revenue and equity for the participating institutions.
Transfer Portal Winners and Losers
The Mountain West Conference has seen significant activity in the transfer portal this offseason, with 81 players entering and 47 added. Grand Canyon, Hawaii, and Nevada emerged as notable winners, successfully reloading their rosters with productive transfers. Conversely, programs like San Jose State and UTEP faced substantial losses, with San Jose State losing 13 players to the portal despite a recent $4 million commitment to support player retention.

NFHS Approves New Clock Adjustment Rules
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has approved new basketball rule changes for the 2026 - 27 season, focusing on game clock management in the final minute of play. A key addition is Rule 5-9-5, which mandates that in the last 59.9 seconds of each quarter and overtime, a minimum of three-tenths (0.3) of a second must expire from the game clock when the ball is legally touched inbounds after a throw-in. Additionally, officials are now permitted to use a silent count if they determine the clock malfunctioned or was not started properly.
