College Basketball Mourns

A somber atmosphere has descended upon the college basketball community following the tragic passing of Ethen Dietz, a sophomore forward at Connors State College in Oklahoma.  Dietz died on Tuesday after suffering a head injury during a game the previous Saturday.  The 6-foot-8 player from Vilonia, Arkansas was a vital contributor to his team, and his loss has resulted in the cancellation of several upcoming games.  A vigil is scheduled to honor his memory.

NCAA Changes

In NCAA news, significant changes may be on the horizon for the transfer portal.  The NCAA's basketball oversight committees have suggested reducing the transfer window to 15 days, starting immediately after the men's and women's Final Fours.  This marks a shift from the current 30-day window that begins after the second round of the NCAA tournament.  If approved, this proposal would take effect in April 2026 and also introduces new regulations concerning coaching changes.

2025 Players Era Festival

On a brighter note, the 2025 Players Era Festival is currently in full swing in Las Vegas, showcasing a lineup of top-ranked teams.  This tournament has expanded to feature 18 men's teams and 4 women's teams, leading to some thrilling matchups.  Tonight's championship game will see No. 7 Michigan face off against No. 12 Gonzaga, while No. 17 Tennessee will compete with Kansas for third place.

High School Basketball

The high school basketball scene is abuzz with excitement as the Thanksgiving Hoopfest approaches in Dallas, Texas.  Scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, the event will showcase five of the nation's top-ranked boys' teams, including the No. 1 Prolific Prep.  This tournament is an opportunity to witness elite talent, featuring numerous top recruits and future college stars.

In Chicago, top-ranked DePaul Prep claimed victory at the Battle of the Bridge Thanksgiving Tournament, led by Rashaun Porter, a Toledo recruit, who dominated with a decisive 53 - 24 win over Lane.  The standout of the game was the 6-foot-7 senior, who recorded 26 points and 12 rebounds.  Despite the lopsided victory, DePaul Prep's coach, Tom Kleinschmidt, stressed that the team still has room for improvement as they face a challenging stretch in their schedule.
