Preseason Polling and Roster Finalizations
As the collegiate basketball calendar inches closer to the November tip-off, preseason expectations are beginning to crystallize. The Kansas Jayhawks are widely projected to open the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the Associated Press preseason poll, followed closely by the Duke Blue Devils. Programs across the country are finalizing their rosters ahead of the fall semester, navigating the unprecedented late-summer movement caused by the recent wave of court-ordered fifth-year eligibility injunctions.
NCAA Loses Appeal to Stay Fifth-Year Eligibility Injunction
The NCAA suffered a significant legal setback in its effort to pause a nationwide injunction that granted a fifth year of eligibility to athletes from the high school class of 2022. Colorado District Court Judge Charlotte Sweeney denied the NCAA's motion to stay her preliminary injunction, meaning the ruling remains in effect while the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals considers the broader case.
The NCAA had argued that failing to pause the injunction would cause "irreparable harm" by forcing colleges to navigate sudden roster chaos just weeks before the fall semester begins. Judge Sweeney rejected this argument as "nonsense," forcing the NCAA to either adapt to the new eligibility landscape or hope for an expedited intervention from the appellate court. The ongoing legal uncertainty has left coaches and compliance departments scrambling to determine which players are eligible to return and how to manage the newly imposed 105-player roster caps.
Field of 68 Revives the 24-Hour Season-Opening Marathon
Nine years after ESPN discontinued its beloved Tip-Off Marathon, The Field of 68 Media Network is resurrecting the 24-hour college basketball season-opening tradition. The digital network will stage an eight-game, round-the-clock marathon on November 2, 2026, to officially tip off the collegiate season.
Rather than featuring high-major programs, the marathon will exclusively showcase 16 mid-major teams. The slate begins at 12:01 a.m. ET with High Point facing Liberty in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and concludes with an 8:00 p.m. ET matchup between Furman and Bethune-Cookman. Eleven of the 16 participating teams won at least 20 games last season, including High Point, which upset fifth-seeded Wisconsin in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The event is designed to highlight the unique, quirky traditions of college basketball that organizers feel are being lost in the modern era of conference realignment.
Florida Gators Finalize Challenging Non-Conference Schedule
The reigning Southeastern Conference (SEC) champion Florida Gators have finalized their 2026 - 27 non-conference schedule, blending neutral-site showcases with a historic home matchup. Head coach Todd Golden's squad will play 14 non-conference games, avoiding traditional home-and-home series in favor of high-profile neutral-site games.
The highlight of the non-conference slate is a December 1 home game against the Duke Blue Devils in the ACC/SEC Challenge. This marks the first time Duke will play on Florida's campus since 1937. The Gators will also participate in the lucrative Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, opening against Notre Dame on November 17, and will face Miami in Tampa on November 2.
AJ Storr Granted Injunction, Transfers to UNLV
In a major development resulting from ongoing nationwide eligibility litigation, former Wisconsin and Ole Miss star AJ Storr has been granted a temporary injunction allowing him an additional year of collegiate eligibility. Following the court's decision, the 6-foot-5 senior guard officially committed to play for the UNLV Runnin' Rebels.
Storr's commitment to UNLV marks the fifth program of his collegiate career. Last season at Ole Miss, Storr was a highly productive offensive weapon, averaging 15.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. His addition provides UNLV head coach Kevin Kruger with a proven, high-volume scorer as the Rebels prepare for a challenging Mountain West Conference Schedule
Inaugural Seattle Holiday Classic Announced
Total Sports Consulting has officially announced the creation of the Seattle Holiday Classic, a premier late-season college basketball showcase scheduled for Saturday, December 19, 2026, at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. The event will feature a high-profile doubleheader designed to highlight top-tier programs and regional rivalries.
The marquee matchup will feature the Baylor Bears against the Washington Huskies. Baylor, led by 24th-year head coach Scott Drew, returns leading scorer Isaac Williams IV and adds five-star prospect Dylan Mingo. Washington enters its third season under Danny Sprinkle with a retooled roster aiming to compete in the Big Ten.
The second game of the doubleheader is a fierce in-state rivalry between the Washington State Cougars and the Seattle U Redhawks. Washington State, under head coach David Riley, features a revamped roster including 2025 Summit League Freshman of the Year Sebastian Akins. Seattle U, coming off a 21-win season and an NIT berth under Chris Victor, returns reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year Will Heimbrodt.

Elite 2028 Prospect AJ Williams Reclassifies to 2027
The scholastic recruiting landscape experienced a major shift as AJ Williams, widely considered the consensus No. 1 overall prospect in the high school class of 2028, officially reclassified to the class of 2027. The move accelerates the timeline for one of the most coveted prep players in the country, forcing collegiate coaching staffs to adjust their recruiting boards and scholarship allocations a year earlier than anticipated. Williams' reclassification continues a growing trend of elite underclassmen moving up a grade to expedite their entry into the collegiate ranks and capitalize on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities.
High School Rules Changes Address Clock Management
State athletic associations across the country are implementing new rules for the 2026 - 27 high school basketball season, with a significant focus on game clock management. New guidelines have been established to help game officials better manage the clock at the end of each quarter and correct timing errors more efficiently. These changes aim to standardize the end-of-game procedures and reduce controversies surrounding buzzer-beating scenarios in scholastic competition.
