College Basketball

College Hoops Turmoil

The ranks of the undefeated were thinned this weekend, with two-top-ten teams suffering their first losses of the season.  No. 2 Iowa State and No. 10 Vanderbilt, both of whom entered the week with perfect records, each dropped two consecutive games.  Iowa State, after a loss to Kansas, was upset by Cincinnati in a 79 - 70 decision that marked Cincinnati's first home victory over a top-two opponent since 1967.  Vanderbilt also stumbled twice, falling to Texas and then to Florida, which now sits atop the SEC standing.  These results are poised to cause a significant reshuffling in the upcoming AP Top 25 poll, with UConn widely expected to ascend to the No. 2 position.  In other notable results, Kentucky continued its pattern of dramatic comebacks, securing a hard-fought road victory against Tennessee.

Scholastic Basketball

Scholastic Hoops

The high school basketball landscape was highlighted by the prestigious Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts.  In a standout matchup, Rainier Beach (Seattle, WA) pulled out a dramatic 91 - 85 overtime victory against Bishop McNamara (Forestville, MD).  The game was a showcase for individual talent, with Rainier Beach's top-ranked senior Tyran Stokes delivering a stunning all-around performance of 37 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocks.  His teammate, freshman phenom J.J. Crawford, was equally impressive, pouring in 32 points, including 10 in the crucial overtime period.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Times released its weekly top 25 rankings for Southern California, with Sierra Canyon, Redondo Union, and Harvard-Westlake claiming the top three spots.  The rankings also spotlighted several other compelling narratives, including the continued scoring prowess of Jason Crowe Jr. of Inglewood and the remarkable 20 - 0 undefeated streak of Elsinore.
