The NCAA has approved significant changes to the transfer portal for both men's and women's college basketball, effective immediately. The transfer window will now open the day after the NCAA Tournament concludes, a shift from the previous system where it opened after Selection Sunday. The window has also been shortened to just 15 days, a drastic reduction from the 45-day window in 2024 and the 30-day window in 2025. This year, the portal will open on April 7, 2026. The move is intended to reduce distractions during the NCAA Tournament and bring the focus back to the games themselves. In a related change, the NCAA also announced an increase in performance-based financial distributions to conferences for teams that advance to the Final Four and Championship game.
No. 2 Iowa State Upset by Kansas
The Kansas Jayhawks, unranked and playing as home underdogs for the first time in program history, delivered a stunning 84 - 63 upset victory over the No. 2 ranked Iowa State Cyclones. The loss was the first of the season for Iowa State, who had started the year with a perfect 16 - 0 record. Kansas dominated the game from the start, leading by double digits for the entire second half and extending their lead to as many as 26 points. Tre White led the Jayhawks with 19 points, including four early three-pointers.
Kentucky Pulls Off Stunning Last-Second Win
The Kentucky Wildcats overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat the LSU Tigers 75 - 74 in a thrilling road victory. The game was won on a buzzer-beating jump shot by freshman center Malachi Moreno. Kentucky trailed by 16 points at halftime and struggled to score for much of the first half. The dramatic win has significant implications for Kentucky's NCAA Tournament seeding and came in their first game since losing a starting player to a season-ending injury.
