NCAA Proposes Sweeping "Five-in-Five" Eligibility Overhaul
The NCAA is pushing for a major foundational change to student-athlete eligibility, proposing a "five-in-five" standard. Supported by NCAA President Charlie Baker, this concept would eliminate the current Division I restriction of playing four seasons within a five-year span, which often involves complex waivers and redshirts. Instead, athletes would have an age-based window of five years to compete, beginning upon high school graduation or when they turn 19 years old. This move aims to simplify eligibility rules, create a clear "clock" for athletes, and potentially reduce the number of eligibility-related lawsuits against the NCAA.
