Pro Basketball Gambling Scandal

U.S. CONGRESS:

A United States Congressional committee is meeting with NBA officials Wednesday in Washington, D.C., in wake of the indictments of Chauncey Billups, Terry Rozier and Damon Jones, sources tell ESPN.

What is La Cosa Nostra?

"La Cosa Nostra" means "our thing" in Italian and refers to the Sicilian Mafia and its offshoot, the Italian-American Mafia.  It is a term used by members to describe their criminal organizations, which are structured as a collection of "families" or clans.  The term is used to denote both a specific organization, like the Sicilian or American Mafia, and the entire organized crime structure itself, say Wikipedia.

A Congressional committee is examining the effects of recent indictments on the league and their influence on young fans, particularly with the rise of mobile gambling.  Experts caution that early exposure to gambling can foster unhealthy attitudes toward money and risk.  The committee may explore stricter regulations on gambling ads targeting minors and improve educational initiatives about gambling risks.  NBA officials will also address incident management and potential policy changes.  Advocates stress a comprehensive strategy to protect youth, highlighting the importance of parental discussions on gambling risks and promoting healthier entertainment options.

Cameron Boozer Makes His Duke Debut

Cameron Boozer, the two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year, made his highly anticipated college debut for Duke on Tuesday night in the Dick Vitale Invitational in Charlotte, leading the Blue Devils to a 75 - 60 victory over Texas.  Despite a challenging start that saw him miss his first seven shots and finish the first half with zero points, Boozer responded to a halftime challenge from coach Jon Scheyer with a dominant second-half performance.

Scheyer told Boozer at halftime that he "played soft" in the first half, which the freshman acknowledged was true.  The Blue Devils trailed 33 - 32 at the break, but Boozer's adjustment in mentality helped turn the game around.  He finished with an impressive stat line of 15 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one block in 36 minutes of play.  The victory marked Duke's 26th consecutive season-opening win and Scheyer's 90th career victory as head coach in just his fourth season.

This performance came as part of an exceptional start for this year's heralded freshman class across college basketball.  Arizona forward Koa Peat exploded for 30 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in a season-opening win over Florida.  Kansas guard Darryn Peterson scored 21 points in a blowout of Green Bay, while BYU wing AJ Dybantsa also tallied 21 points in a victory over Villanova.  Duke remains ranked No. 10 in the CBS Sports Top 25 and 1 rankings following the win.

Nation's Top Player Leaves Notre Dame

In a major development that has sent shockwaves through the high school basketball world, Tyran Stokes, considered the No. 1 high school basketball player in the nation from the class of 2026, has officially withdrawn from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High School in California.  The school confirmed the news on Wednesday, just weeks before the season opener.  The 6-foot-7 forward arrived at Notre Dame last season from a Northern California prep school and made an immediate impact, helping the Knights reach both the Southern Section Open Division championship game and the Southern California Regional final.  His sudden departure could produce significant changes in national television game plans for Notre Dame, which had been expected to be one of the premier teams in the country with Stokes leading the way.

While Notre Dame is still expected to field a competitive team with San Diego State commit Zachary White and top junior NaVorro Bowman on the roster, Stokes' exit dramatically shifts the power balance in Southern California high school basketball.  His departure makes Sierra Canyon the new Mission League preseason favorite.  The school did not disclose the reasons for Stokes' withdrawal, leaving the basketball community to speculate about his next destination and the circumstances surrounding this unexpected move.
